Worship Devotional: “Heart within a Heart” by Will Herron

By Will Herron

A few months ago I was sitting in our Thursday morning church prayer meeting. After spending some time in worship together, we began praying for different aspects of the church. Michele Wrigley (aka: Prayer Warrior Michele) began praying for Sara Brownson, our Trinity Kids Director. As she prayed, she also saw a picture. She shared as she prayed:

“I saw a picture of a heart with lots of little hearts within it… I think that heart is your heart Sara… and all the hearts inside are those of the kids of HTC”

This picture has stuck with me since and I’ve shared it with numerous people over the last few months. Sara really does carry the kids of HTC in her heart. She has a paternal type concern and affection for them (hence why she is so good at her role!).

The image reminded me of the apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians, saying the following:

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you,  since I have you in my heart…God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. (Phil 1:7-8)

Paul carried these folks in his heart. He had been there from the genesis of this church, had walked alongside them in the early days and then continued to mentor/disciple them as he continued his missionary journey. The Holy Spirit intentionally led Paul to these people (see Acts 16:9) and Paul was faithful to the call.

In reflection, a valid question for all of us is:

Who is the Spirit leading me to carry in my heart?

Theres no doubt that we are called to love others as a whole but often the Lord leads us to particular people in particular seasons. To come alongside, to patiently navigate the various seasons, disappointments and joys, questions and failures. To harbor a specific, parental (Godly) concern and love for those God has put in front of us.

So! Be open to the movement of the Spirit team. Willing to both open your heart and carry the hearts of others.
